Dalhousie Tourism in Himachal Pradesh
Dalhousie is a popular hill station of India located in the Dhauladhar range of Himachal Pradesh. Dalhousie, perched amidst the Western Himalayas, act as the gateway to the Chamba District of Himachal Pradesh.
The hill station of Dalhousie was established in 1854 during the British Raj as a summer retreat for the British. The British wanted to build a as a health sanatorium on the western slopes of the Dauladhar ranges and the Raja of Chamba transferred the plateau of Kathlog, Portreyn, Tehra and Bakrota hills for the same. The place was named after Lord Dalhousie, the first British Governor General and the then British Viceroy in India. Later the hill plateau of Balun was also added to Dalhousie in 1866.
The quaint hill station of Dalhousie, which is spread over an area of about 14 sq. km, is built on and around five hills, at an altitude between 1525 – 2378 meters above the sea level. Dalhousie is famous for its picturesque walks amidst Deodar, Pine and Oak forests that are situated around the town. Dalhousie also offers period architecture that ranges from anceint Indian temple architecture to Scottish and Victorian styled Churches and mansions. The most famous old churches in Dalhousie are St. John’s Church (constructed in 1903 A.D.), and St. Patrick’s Church (1909 A D). Dalhousie also offers thick and lush Deodar forests of Bakrota Hills (4 km), St. Andrew’s Church (the Church of Scotland), St. Francis’ Church, St. John’s Church, Panchphulla, etc.
Other popular destinations in the vicinity of Dalhousie are Subhash Baoli (1.6 km), Jandri Ghat (2 km) and the Round (4.8 km). The majestic view of the Chenab (Chandrabhaga), the Ravi and the Beas valleys and the surrounding landscape of Dalhousie is possible from spots such as Dainkund or Dayankund (2745 meters, 10 km), Kalatop (2440 meters, 8.5 km) and Khajjiar (2000 meters, 27 km). Dalhousie also offers many wildlife sanctuaries and national forests such as Kalatop-Khaijjar. Trekking opportunities, like the annual pilgrimage to Mani Mahesh Temple and Lake are also available at Dalhousie at the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges for trekking enthusiasts.
Dalhousie is famous for its salubrious climate throughout the year. The most suitable time to visit Dalhousie is from May to September when the weather is pleasant.
