Home school – Coping by Not Cooking
One of the challenging aspects of home schooling isn’t the schooling itself. It is the “home” part. The part where we cook, clean, maintain, organize, and sort out our day-to-day lives. Managing home as well as schooling is the difficult part. Comparatively speaking, the school portion is not that difficult!
When I was home schooling, one of the ways that I managed was by cooking as little as possible. Don’t misunderstand me, I enjoy cooking, and my family has always liked the dinners I provide. We ate every meal with each other as a family, at the dining table every night. However, my intention was to cook dinner as little as possible.
Freezer cooking, food preparation in big amounts less often, started to be a standard. Even though I
didn’t cook as little as once a month, as several books recommend, I did do large-batch cooking every couple of weeks. It really helped me provide for my terrific family while cooking less often.
The books were basic and straight-forward, nothing extravagant, plus they offered excellent instructions on easy methods to take my typical home-cooking and adjust it for freezer cooking. Should you pick up the books, you can practically prepare your complete holiday meal in advance, and have a significantly more calm family celebration!
Another strategy for cooking less often is now a standard household joke around here. I depended on Costco. Costco lasagna, salad mixes… See, I am not overly ashamed to admit it! I am truly being completely truthful here! My best meals have come from Costco! Especially as the kids got older, and their pursuits took us away from home more frequently, I started to depend heavily on their meals. Unfortunately, I can’t do this as much anymore. You aren’t going to believe this, but when you don’t have kids at home, it is easy for the Costco-sized chicken to get a freezer burn well before you can use it all. I am not joking.
My kids are cooking by themselves in college now. They frequently shop at Costco. They put meals in the freezer at the beginning of the week. They can cook for on their own and get great grades, because they have learned to cook as little as possible too!
My apologies to all my friends who grind their own wheat and cook organic on a regular basis. I hope you will still love me!
