Where to find Collectable Jewellery today

Many women admire expensive, beautiful jewellery paraded in front of us by fashion magazines and celebrities. But not many of us can afford the many tens, if not hundreds of thousands of pounds needed to be able to purchase such pieces. How then, can today’s modern woman enjoy inexpensive, fashionable jewellery, whilst also collecting exciting, important pieces that will last her lifetime?

Firstly, always make a clear distinction between jewellery you are buying to follow a trend or specific fashion and jewellery that stands outside of fashion. Ask yourself, is this something you can see yourself wearing in 20 years time? Chances are, if you wouldn’t wear it passed 40, then don’t consider parting with a lot of cash. We all like quirky, fun jewellery, but a pair of rainbow coloured, 6 inch parrot earrings aren’t really something you should be spending serious money on. So, for these seasonable, fashion-led items, shop at budget fashion outlets, online stores, lower end high street stores and even markets. Paying less should not mean you have to compromise on quality though, there are brilliant independent retailers, especially online, selling wonderful, quality jewellery at exceptional value for money.

However, if you are looking for something with longevity, something special to add to your collection, you need to put ‘fashion’ aside. Consider what sort of piece you are after. Is it a ring, a necklace or some earrings? Perhaps a brooch or maybe a suite of jewels? Then think about your own taste. What colour metal do you usually prefer? What are you favourite colours for stones? Don’t necessarily be too stringent here, deciding on 18ct white gold set with garnet and amethyst. More keep in mind you prefer white to yellow metals and your favourite colours are red and purple. There is a huge scope within jewellery with lots and lots of different finishes and gemstones, so be a bit open minded.

Stay away from most of the big high street chains. The jewellery they market serves a purpose, mainly their margin to sales equations, so you are unlikely to find a quality, collectable piece there. Instead, look online for independent jewellery designers. Many sell their own designs or if not, will be able to tell you where their designs are stocked. Jewellery fairs are an ideal place to find a designer whose work you admire. They showcase some of their best work and you get to meet with them, talk about their designs and also, you might see something you like which, although not perfect, you might be able to get the designer to create something bespoke for you in that style. Don’t be afraid to shop around and describe what you are looking for. Word of mouth is by far one of the best ways to get a recommendation, so ask friends and family and even strangers, if you see someone wearing something gorgeous that you admire. With a very small amount of effort, you will end up buying something unique, beautiful, design-led, fantastic quality and more importantly, exactly what you wanted.
