Green Conscience Decorators Turn to Bamboo
Many more homeowners are trying to become better stewards of the planet when it comes to caring for and decorating their homes. It is common to hear about corporate entities that have taken up the cause by offering consumers better, greener products. Some say that their new conscience is more a matter of cashing-in on the green wave rather than their being more conscientious corporations, but none the less, it makes good sense and if they can make a dollar while doing so, why not?
The same smart thinking is starting to take hold with the individual homeowner as well. All around the U.S. you will find people that are taking the environment much more seriously when taking care of their homes. One of the earliest examples of this more enlightened behavior is seen in the way in which homeowners care for their lawns and gardens. In years past, most would spray their lawns and gardens with whatever product was said to be the best at killing weeds and growing fatter, juicier tomatoes. However, more often than not these products also contained harmful chemicals that lingered in the ground for many years and eventually leached into the water supply. The same was true of chemical insecticides that many people sprayed in and around their homes to keep the bugs at bay. While many were very good at killing bugs, they were also good at eventually killing the homeowner, with some like chlordane being taken off the market completely.
As an alternative, many homeowners have turned to non-toxic applications to control weeds, to grow their vegetables and to rid their homes of unwanted pests. And while these products may not be as immediately effective as the more lethal and more toxic products they used before, they still get the job done and you don’t have to worry about your children playing on the lawn because while very green, it is a cleverly camouflaged toxic waste dump.
More and more American homeowners are also considering the environmental consequences of their choices when they are decorating and designing the interior and exteriors of the homes. The deforestation of ancient forests around the planet is known to anyone that cares to listen so while Brazilian cherry flooring or redwood paneling might look beautiful, if we keep cutting it at the pace we are at present, their beauty and benefits will soon be little more than a distant memory. So, with that in mind, many people are turning to the most versatile and renewable building and decorating material on the planet, bamboo for all of their home decorating and building needs. Too often people think of grass huts in a rain forest when they think of using bamboo as a building material but nothing could be further from the truth.
Bamboo grows in nearly every moderately warm, damp climate in the world. It is a grass, not wood so it is plentiful and while it is called a grass, when harvested and cultivated correctly, bamboo can rival any building material on earth for its flexibility, strength, and durability; to say nothing of its beauty and exotic elegance that it brings to decorative displays and home accessories. The strength of bamboo compares favorably to certain grades of steel and almost any hardwood. It is durable and wear-resistant so when chosen for flooring the homeowner need not worry. This is no bamboo mat being used to support your walls.
Environmentally conscience decorators and builders are well versed in the many ways in which bamboo building materials, furniture, and decorations can add beauty and value to your home. At the same time, you will be saving precious natural resources that are not nearly as plentiful or renewable as bamboo.
