This de?nition is apt for us, because in a cluster a quorum is the number of nodes required to make an appropriate decision regarding any given subject and keep the cluster operational. A witness disk is an optional data disk within your infrastructure that contains a copy of the cluster Configuration database. The cluster uses the number of nodes it has access to as well as the witness disk to deter-mine whether it should continue operating. In node majority mode, the cluster will continue to operate as long as the majority of nodes (two out of three, for example) continue to run. In node and disk majority mode, it’s required that the cluster have a majority of the nodes, and the disk (or ?le share, in the case of node and ?le share majority) counts as an addi- tional vote that can break the case of a tie in even number of node environments. Addition- ally, you can have the witness disk be the single factor that determines whether the cluster continues to run.

The purpose of network load balancing (NLB) is to relieve the burden on one computer 70-680 and place it on another. Just like in our section on Terminal Services, sometimes servers are running so many tasks or doing so many deeds that to do just one more can cause an extremely heavy and unnecessary load. Take, for example, the illustration in Figure 8.4. In Figure 8.4, the server farm is extremely unbalanced. Right now, Server 1 is so overburdened that it is constantly operating at 100 percent load, while Server 2, Server 3, and Server 4 are operating at less than 20 percent each.
