Mcleodganj Hill Station in Himachal Pradesh

Mcleodganj is a famous hill station located on the Dhauladhar Ranges in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. Mcleodganj is situated at an average altitude of 1700 meters above the sea level on the upper suburbs of Dharamshala (10 km).

Mcleodganj, initially, was home to the Gaddi tribe. Later it became an integral territory of Katoch Dynasty. After the annexation of Punjab to the British Empire, this place was named as McLeodganj Donald Friell McLeod, who was the then Lieutenant Governor of Punjab of British India (1865 – 1870). Though it was the summer resort of the British in 1840’s it acted as a garrison town in 1850’s. It also served as an administration centre until it was destroyed in the massive earthquake of 1905. After Indian Independence, McLeodganj became a health resort until 1950’s. In the 1960’s, it became the official seat of the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso. Today, this hill station is renowned as the Little Lhasa (Dhasa) and it abodes several Tibetan instituitions, Buddhist monasteries and Tibetan refugees.

Mcleodganj has become the learning centre of Tibetan Buddhism and a popular tourist destination in Himachal. Tsuglagkhang that enshrines the statues of Shakyamuni, Valokitesvara and Padamasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) is the major attraction of Mcleodganj. Some of other famous Buddhist monasteries in McLeodganj are Namgyal Monastery, Gompa Dip Tse-Chok Ling, etc. The Anglican Church of St. John in the Wilderness that lies in the forest near Forsyth Gunj and Dal Lake are other major attractions of McLeodganj.

McLeodganj also offers nearby destinations such as Dharamkot, Bhagsu, Triund, Gaggal and Lower Dharamshala and other hill stations such as Tulu, Manali, Shimla, etc. to its visitors. The Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) is a famous destination in McLeodganj for the art lovers wherein an annual ten-day festival of Tibetan Theatres, music and dance is conducted in the month of May. McLeodganj is also a major shopping destination for the tourists visiting the Himachal and this old colonial town is famous for souvenirs like Tibetan handicrafts, thangkas, Tibetan carpets, garments, wooden masks, paper drawings, beads, etc.

Enveloped in the thick forests of Oak, Pine, Deodar and Rhododendron, the scenic town of McLeodganj remain cool and salubrious throughout the year.

McLeodganj is accessible by road and can be easily reached from New Delhi and Chandigarh. The nearest airport to McLeodganj is at Gaggla (13 km) and the nearest railway station is at Pathankot (85 km).
