Srirangapatna Tourism in Mandya District
Srirangapatna (Shrirangapattana), formerly known also as Seringapatam, is one of the major tourist destinations in India known for its cultural and historic importance. Situated in the Mandya district of Karnataka at about 20 km away from the Mysore city, Srirangapatna lies at an average elevation of 679 meters above the sea level.
Srirangapatna town took its name from the Ranganathaswamy temple, which is one of the most reverred Vaishnavite centres in South India. Srirangapatns is an island on the River Kaveri and the rulers of Ganga Dynasty and Vijayanagara Empire dedicated it to Lord Ranganatha since the 9th century. The town is considered auspicious with the presence of River Kaveri, which is considered among the Sapta Sindhu (the seven holy rivers). This town became the capital city of Wodeyar Dynasty of Mysore from 1610 until the Indian Independence in the year 1947, though it was captured for a short while and made the capital of Sultanate of Mysore by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. Srirangapatna is famous for the historic battle of 1977 that marked the fall of Tipu Sultan.
Srirangapatna offers many attractions to the tourists. Ranganathaswamy temple is the foremost attraction of this small island town, which was built in the 9th century. The Fort of Srirangapatna, which encompasses the temple, also includes a mosque that was built during the reign of Sultanate of Mysore. Daria Daulat Bagh, the summer palace of Tipu Sultan, built in 1784, is yet another major atraction in the place. Masjid-E-Ala or Jamia Masjid, built by Tipu Sultan, is situated towards the Bangalore Gate of the Fort in 1787 and it is known for its architectural marvel. Gumbaz, the mausoleum of Hyde Ali, Fathima Begum and Tipu Sultan, built in between 1782 – 1784, is situated within Lal Bagh Garden of Srirangapatna and it is yet another beautiful monument favoured by the visitors. The tombs of other family members of Hyder can also be seen along the platform and verandah of Gumbaz. Colonel Bailey’s Dungeon, used by Tipu Sultan to imprison British Officers, is also famous among the tourists.
Srirangapatna is also home to many temple complexes like Lakshminarasimha Swamy Temple, Panduranga Swamy Temple, the Sathyanarayana Swamy Temple, etc. Srirangapatna also offers many destinations such as Nimishambha Temple of Ganjam, Rangantittu Bird Sanctuary, Shivanasamudra Falls, Talakkad, Mysore, etc.
The peak tourist season to visit Srirangapatna is from November to March. Srirangapatna is easily accessible from Bangalore and Mysore by trains. This small island town is also linked to all major towns in Karnataka by roads.
