On line bullying and cyber intimidation…. just what is the soulution for this problem?
Cyber bullying is a relatively new term that is generally used to describe what happens when an individual uses the Internet or technology to slander, mistreat or threaten another individual. Although this type of behavior can be found in virtually every age group, it is most common among teenagers. One of the facts about cyber bullying that many individuals fail to understand is how prevalent it is. According to one study, as many as 42% of all kids have been bullied at one time or another online. Although it may seem harmless, this type of activity can have real physical effects on the victims.
Another one of the facts about cyber bullying that may come as a surprise to both parents and teachers is the fact that almost 3/4 of students have visited a site or page that bashes one of their peers. Cyber bullying can take on a number of different forms whether it is a website designed specifically to make fun of another individual or threatening e-mails or instant messages being sent to a particular individual. Like most crimes, cyber bullying is limited only by the imagination of the individual behind it.
What makes this such a dangerous behavior is the fact that it can be difficult to actually catch the bullied, especially in the act. This is due in large part to the anonymous nature of the Internet in general. A person can build a website designed to slander or hurt another person without ever having to claim ownership of it. Unless law enforcement gets involved it may be virtually impossible to determine exactly who the perpetrator is. This is one of the unfortunate facts about cyber bullying. Another reason why it is hard to catch the person behind the bullying is the fact that many victims remain silent rather than speaking out.
When it comes to the facts about cyber bullying, perhaps the most important to understand is how necessary it is for victims of this type of behavior to feel comfortable talking about. It is virtually impossible to put a stop to bullying if it is never brought to the attention of parents, teachers, friends or some other responsible individual who can step up and act on the behalf of the victim. This type of bullying is most prevalent among girls who are almost twice as likely to be victims of bullying or perpetrators of it. Because this behavior has increased, it is more important than ever for everyone to be aware of it.
