‘Mfuko la’ Malawi

The colors of the Black Liberation Movement, begun by Marcus Garvey, are in their simplest African form in the flag of the Malawi Congress Party, under which Malawi achieved independence, which was achieved on 6 July 1964. An official national flag has been in use since then, and is flown consistently from big and small flag poles throughout Malawi’s land.

The red ensign sun is stylized from the one that appeared on the shield of Nyasaland and which also features in the arms of Malawi. This is characteristic of the way in which the flag of a dominant party is altered to make it into a national flag, as happened in India, Pakistan and many African countries.

After the event, the colors and emblems are given different interpretations, as with Malawi, where the red is for blood shed in the struggle for freedom, black for Africa and green for forests and fields, and the sun is the dawn. The leopard in the arms also appeared in the previous colonial shield.

The republic of Malawi is a nation located in the southeastern part of the continent of Africa. In the past the territory was called ‘Nyasaland’. From reading various sources on this African country, I learned that it is one of the least developed countries in Africa, and hence the world. Malawi has been very much dependent on humanitarian aid from other countries, including European nations.

Malawi has been struggling economically for years, and is also among the one the most densely populated nations in Africa, and the world. More than eighty percent of the population lives in rural regions. One of the most substantial economic resources is agriculture. Some of the exports products are cotton, corn and potatoes. Some years ago, concerns were raised in regards to possible corruption among politicians and such.

Some important dates in the history of this African country include, 1889, 1891, 1953, 1964 and 1966. In 1966 Malawi became an independent republic. Malawi was recognized as being independent. In 1953 the protectorate became part of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. Some decades before, Malawi was a British Protectorate. The 2 main languages of the country are English and Chichewa.

The president flies a different design, a flag that is red with the lion from the arms above the scroll with the name Malawi, all in yellow. The army flag is also in red, with a yellow rampant lion above the sun and wavy lines as in the crest. All these flags are raised beautifully on national, regional and local flag poles.
