Urology – A Recently Recognized Sub-Specialty

The medical and surgical focus on study, diagnosis and treatment of the urinary tracts of both males and females along with the reproductive system of males is called Urology. Though recently recognized as a sub-specialty of general surgery, evidences of diseases and bladder stones have been found in Egyptian mummies that goes a long way back.

The urinary and reproductive tracts are very closely linked and hence the disorders or the problems often affect the other. The organs covered under urology are kidneys, ureters, adrenal glands, urinary bladder, urethra and the male reproductive organs. The involvement of many organs makes this field greatly challenging for the urologists and the physicians. The involvement of many organs and physiological systems gave way to the sub-disciplines of urology like Endourology, Urologic Oncology, Neurourology, Pediatric Urology, Androurology, Reconstructive Urology and Urogynecology.

The treatment for urological problems can either be a surgical or non-surgical procedure depending upon the situation. If surgery is suggested, the choice has to be made between the conventional open surgery and the laparoscopic surgery.

What is Laparoscopy? What are the benefits of Laparoscopic Surgery and what is the cost involved?

While making choices these are the basic questions that come to our minds. Laparoscopic surgery is a technique in which surgery is performed through small incisions which are usually between 0.5 – 1.5cm. Laparoscopic surgery is also known by the names of minimal invasive surgery, keyhole surgery or bandaid surgery. Such surgeries are performed through small openings with the aide of magnified images displayed on the TV monitors.

Though very similar to each other Laparoscopic surgery are usually performed within the abdominal and pelvic cavities whereas the keyhole surgery is performed on the thoracic or chest cavity. However the conventional open surgery also termed Laparotomy is performed on the abdomen with a full size incision which allows the surgeon to have clear picture of the organs, tissues and blood vessels of the abdomen.

Advantages of Laparoscopy over laparotomy:

  •     The smaller keyholes made in comparison to the larger cuts have lower impact on the body and its organs.
  •     Precision during surgery
  •     Return to work faster with very less recovery time
  •     Small incisions make post operative pain lesser by 20% in comparison to laparotomy
  •     20% less cost in comparison to open surgery
