Miami Heat Tickets: Franchise Overview
The city of Miami first experienced pro hoops with an ABA franchise from 1968-69 to 1971-72. In the late eighties, the NBA decided to bring its product to the Sunshine State. The Orlando Magic and Miami Heat began play in the league in 1988-89.
As an expansion squad, Miami took some lumps in the early going. The Heat won a total of just 33 games over its first two seasons.
While Miami reached the playoffs twice in the early nineties, the arrival of head coach Pat Riley in 1995-96 would mark a turning point for the squad. After successful stints with the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks, Riley elevated Miami into one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference. The Heat reached the playoffs in each of Riley’s first six years with the club. More recently, Miami has made the postseason in six of the last seven years.
Heat’s Championship Season
With Riley working in the front office, the Heat was able to acquire star center Shaquille O’Neal prior to the 2004-05 season. O’Neal and young guard Dwyane Wade turned Miami into a title contender. However, the Heat lost in the Eastern Conference Finals in 2004-05 to the Detroit Pistons.
In the following season, Miami got off to a sluggish 11-10 start under head coach Stan Van Gundy. With his team struggling, Riley returned to the bench in a bid to spark his club. In the end, the move paid off. The Heat returned to the conference finals. This time, Miami was able to reach the NBA Finals. In a series against the Dallas Mavericks, the Heat rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win the championship.
Home Arena
Since the 1999-2000 seasons, the Miami Heat has played at the American Airlines Arena (capacity of 19,600). With a chance to watch one of the NBA’s hottest teams, Miami Heat tickets are widely coveted.
