George Simchuk: Humble Humanitarian Pilot
George Simchuk embodies what it means to be a humanitarian. Over the last four decades, he uses his flying ability to make the world a better place. He didn’t begin his career as a pilot, but rather with a degree in engineering with a concentration in mining. He worked for Glamis Gold LTD when it was struggling. Through his business prowess, Simchuk turned the company around. From these profits, he pursued his volunteer pilot missions.
He works in harmony with conservationists to sustain the environment. He also transports cancer patients to treatment centers who otherwise couldn’t afford to travel to the centers. He also flies for an organization called Angel Flight. This group provides medical flights for all individuals who have serious illnesses. Besides his work in the United States, Simchuk also serves as an Emergency Medical Technician in Africa. He volunteers his time so that more tribal societies can receive the care that they need. Through these organizations, Simchuk has flown throughout the nation improving the lives of individuals, one flight at a time. These are only some of the causes that he actively supports.
George Simchuk is extremely passionate about his work with Challenge Air for Kids and Friends. These events are for children with special needs. These events are held throughout the United States. Simchuk flies to various locations, regardless of distance, to participate in these events. His latest work allowed him to serve children in Oregon and Washington. At each of these events, hundreds of children with their families rely on the kindness of pilots. At the most recent event, there were fifteen pilots who offered their skills, planes, and paid all the costs associated with flights. In one day, Simchuk completed fourteen flights with three to four children in each flight.
During their time in the air, each child is Simchuk’s co-pilot. They were allowed wear head-sets to communicate with their passengers and use controls. For many children, it is their first time in an airplane. Simchuk regulates the altitude to approximately 2,000 feet. This enables the children to view familiar landmarks, houses, and places. This chance of a lifetime enables these children to bond with their families and their environment. His constant work and humanitarian ambitions have impacted thousands of individuals. George Simchuk is a role model to all those want to improve their community and serve others. He is a prime example of what an idol should be.
