Is an offshore oil and gas job for you?
You often hear of people wanting to go work on offshore oil rigs in some exotic place half way round the world. If truth be known these positions can be difficult to come by and even more difficult to hold. The world over, oil and gas companies hire individuals to work on ships and oil rigs. The length of time out at sea varies. You will work on a “on / off” pattern. Patterns can cover anything like one month on to one month off. Oil rig positions are often sought after by young individuals who do not have the necessary experience. Oil and gas companies are almost always willing to train individuals as long as they can show a yearning to work and these individuals can grow quickly within the industry if they show some type of aptitude and willingness to learn.
The starter pay for oil and gas jobs is typically higher than your normal job and is another reason why these jobs can be very popular. A main downside but not in all cases is the time spent away from home. When starting out it doesn’t pose as much of a problem but as the individual matures they find themselves not wanting to spend as much time offshore as they wish.

Most oil and gas company recruiters will use a third party to handle their recruitment process. For this reason there are a number of website portals and recruitment specialists in the area of oil and gas.
A point often forgotten by individuals applying for work is that they are under the illusion that an oil and gas job is a dirty job. Fortunately that is no longer true, as technology has improved so has the process of extraction. As more and more areas of extraction have become computerised, different types of job roles are expected from individuals who wish to enter the industry.
As oil and gas is mined from many countries it has become easier for applicants to decide on which country they wish to work from. Obviously your pay will be affected in where you decide to work. Working on oil rigs or in the Middle East brings in a much higher pay than western countries due to the obvious reasons of these countries being in a political turmoil.
Offshore jobs are difficult to be obtained by new comers as most rig employers want employees to have ten years of experience plus. A shortage is happening where these places are not being filled up but rather than employing someone with no experience recruiters will look onshore and choose the best onshore workers. This is the best way to get into the industry of offshore rigging. There are many positions that can be filled in the oil and gas industry and one is no longer limited to one type of job. These days anything from computer related roles are accepted to safety management. Many Middle East countries will require that you hold a degree but the payment in return is worth the personal advancement.
