RESPIRATORY CARE

Respiratory care is a key component for people with diseases that create excess secretions such as cystic fibrosis, COPD and bronchiectasis. With application of the appropriate airway clearance system, these patients can not only manage the secretions but, in some cases, improve their lung function.

Which airway system is best for which condition can vary, since the underlying pathology differs from one illness to another. A common respiratory care treatment is chest physiotherapy that applies pressure through clapping, vibration or compression along with postural drainage in order to dislodge the mucus and move it out of the airways. This airway clearance system is repeated over different parts of the chest until each area of the lung is cleared.

Mechanical devices can be added to the respiratory care treatment in order to increase the vibration or more carefully direct the pulses. Examples of different airway clearance systems are high-frequency chest compression systems or vests, mechanical percussors and airway clearance devices, and positive expiratory pressure (PEP) masks.

As a type of respiratory care, the vest is useful when overall shaking is beneficial, such as when the patient is immobile. However, high-frequency chest compression vest have not been proven to be a more effective airway clearance system than chest physiotherapy whether done manually or with the aid of mechanical devices.

A more focused and powerful airway clearance system involves use of mechanical percussors and airway clearance devices. While there are several measures for comparing one airway clearance system to another, pulse force tests show that Med Systems Fluid Flo® 2500 percussor and the Electro Flo® 5000 airway clearance device are provide significantly more pulse force than other percussors or vibrators. Furthermore, with its 25 targeted settings, the range of Electro Flo® ‘s respiratory care far exceeds all other products.

Yet another airway clearance system consists of using the PEP mask to increase resistance to expiratory airflow. The mask is also effective for both noninvasive ventilation treatments and intermittent positive pressure respiratory care. The Med Systems anesthesia mask is such a popular device for respiratory care that it has become the standard in the industry.
