Where Will I Compete in My Next Golf Tournament?
As we all know, the economy has been spiraling downward throughout the years. Our country is in a recession that cannot be avoided. All sorts of businesses have been affected, including the golf industry. Interviewing professionals in the golf industry has best stated that “there is a systematic demise of the industry.” Golf courses have suffered greatly throughout the years for a number of different reasons.
Let’s look at a few statistics from the NGF Golf Industry Report. Since the mid 1990’s the supply of golf courses has out-paced the increase of golfers. Golf facilities have grown 24%, while the number of golfers has grown 16%. On top of this, the numbers of rounds of golf played are down 30-35% from the peak. Because of this, 60% of golf courses have lowered maintenance standards. The NGF Golf Industry Report claims 100-200 golf facilities of troubled golf courses will close per year until supply and demand reach equilibrium. People typically stereotype golf as being a wealthy sport, but revenues are at an all time low, and golf courses are desperate for more golfers.
Other than the recession, what is causing this problem? The NGF Golf Industry Report claims that successful facilities show a higher degree of good management behaviors. In other words, the well-maintained courses bring in the greatest revenue. These also happen to be the most expensive courses, and even some of the most passionate golfers cannot afford to play at places like these. It is difficult to hold all-inclusive tournaments at exclusive golf resorts and clubs.
An answer to this problem surprisingly lies within social media. One might think the social media world is dominated by the young and therefore not all that applicable to the golf community, but this younger following is exactly what the golf industry needs. John Hickey explains that, “Social media should be embedded in all golf-based outreach,” (NGF Golf Report Fall 2009, page 6). Luckily, there is a website that can help.
