Ulcerative Colitis is a Dangerous Disease

Colitis refers to the inflammation of the inner lining of the colon or the large intestine which is a delicate part of the human anatomy. Colon is a hollow muscular tube which receives the products of digestion from the small intestine and at last removes them from the body in the form of stool through the anus. It is located in the abdomen and various areas related to it can also get affected under the effect of colitis. Another name for colitis is ulcerative colitis. In a recent survey it has been found that out of every 100 people at least 35 of them are suffering through it. More than 100,000 cases are observed annually where people are diagnosed with this problem. This reflects the condition that is prevailing in the country for this disease.

The numbers keep rising every year rather than decreasing which is also making the situation worse day by day and minute by minute. An extreme case may lead to severe complications which can make a patient’s life uneasy and worthless. It is essential that the diagnosis is done at the correct time, in order to give proper medical help to the person in need. There are myriad causes for the reason of having colitis but the most common causes for it are genes and stress.  There have been cases where due to hereditary reasons the next generation suffers from colitis.

There can completely identical twins or similar twins with a few recognizable differences, ethnic differences by some turn of luck and genetic markers or linkages. Environmental factors include diet and breast feeding which have been observed to be some of the most common factors for the occurrence of colitis. Many dietary substances or products trigger the inflammation of colon and can even lead to having Crohn’s disease.  Accutane (a drug) is considered to be a possible trigger for Crohn’s disease and colitis in some cases too. At times colitis also infects people due to low or reduced immunity.

Due to the decline in immunity, colitis attacks some area near the colon making it a big problem for the patient for a long time. Some of the common infecting bacteria are Campylobacter, Shigella, Salmonella and E.Coli. They are microscopic colitis as well which are collagenous colitis and lymphocytic colitis. Both of them are uncommon disease which affects mostly older women. It leads to frequent diarrhea and blood in stools too.Patients suffering from colitis often show intestinal symptoms leading to it. They usually get apthous ulcers, ophthalmic ulcers like episcleritis and pyoderma gangrenosum which also affects the skin.

These are some of the symptoms which reveal that an individual may be suffering from it. Signs like chronic diarrhea, dizziness, weakness, dry mouth and decreased output of urine are some of the signs which reveal that a patient needs to get a full diagnosis as soon as possible.Blood tests, colonoscopy, physical examination and temperature check are some of the treatments which are done before starting with the medications. The initial treatment is to rehydrate a patient by giving oral fluids, if the patient isn’t able to take it, then intravenous drips are the best way of sending nutrition to the body. Medicines should be used to reduce the inflammation, soreness, blood in stools and diarrhea as well. Thus, with all such treatments, a patient is bound to come back to the original state and live a normal and healthy life.
