Stainless steel is a fascinating metal to weld. But it is not that easy if few tricks are not mastered properly. These few tricks make the whole process and course produce better welds. While welding stainless bear in mind that everything shows up in stainless. It is easily reactive to excessive heat by warping and distorting once it cools. Excessive heating leaves distorting marks. It gets easily scratched so proper care should be taken when welding on a metal table.  Brass or aluminum acts a good heat sink, so they should be used when welding stainless. A piece of brass behind the seam of the weld absorbs the heat and also prevents any burn or scratch. Expose the metal in less heat. It’s worth the extra time to make sure you have the heat sinks in place before beginning your weld. This allows you to actually weld the entire seam without interruption. At the end of the welding process and pull the heat off it always tends to turn a dark gray. This is because the metal is exposed to metal at its hottest point. But a small trick will enable you to avoid this.  During the process when you reach the end of the weld just take your foot off the pedal. Wait until the weld pool solidifies and then touch the tungsten to the metal and hold it there till your gas stops flowing. You’ll notice that the color will come back to the weld. A beautiful salmon color is achieved. But again bear in mind that this is only possible with a setup that uses a foot pedal. A dry rig system where you have to use a lift arc this is not possible.

It takes lot of patience, fitness and a proper envision for stainless steel welding. Apart from this some strict rules should be followed to complete the process accurately. What are the rules?

  • Avoid using carbon steel brush or carbon steel filler rod. Initially the weld will look lustrous but gradually it will get corroded by rust.
  • Use a glass lens because it works better. Though they are bit more costly but they function better. You need all the help you can get with gas shielding because not only the weld, but the hot tip of the stainless steel tig rod needs to be protected by argon. Why?  This is because oxidation of the hot tip of the filler makes the puddle sluggish. A sluggish puddle takes more amps to flow. More amps mean more discoloration, more heat input, and more distortion.

These few rules will ensure that the process is carried out with full perfection. Implementing correct process and practice will soon get you to expert status in no time.
