Lord murugan temples
Thaipusam is an important festival dedicated to the Lord Murugan or Kartikeya observed by the Hindus of southern India and Tamils around the world.
There are 2 Gifts that we honour on this day. One is the Vel given by the Goddess Maa Shakti to her son Muruga which represents the divine feminine power to awaken higher consciousness. It gives us grace, destroys our enemies and makes us free from debts and diseases. This is mainly given to destroy asuran in Tiruchendur. The second is the ultimate gift of grace- the Light Body- given to Swami Ramalingam.
Vaikasi Visakam is the grand celebration of Lord Muruga’s Birthday in the Vedic month of Vaikasi when the full moon coincides with the Vishakha Star. Lord Muruga had appeared for a special purpose to eradicate the adharma and save this Earth from demons. In Thiruchendur more than two lakhs will participate in the festival. The procession of Sri Jayanthinathar with Valli and Deivanai is conducted during night.
Avani Festival is another one festival for Lord Muruga. In this festival devotee numbering 2 laksh will participate in Tiruchendur. In this festival some other functions are Sikappu sathi Festival, Pachai Sathi Festival, Car Festival and Float Mandagapadi Festival.
Skanda Sashti is the powerful time to quickly increase your vibrations for power, new perceptions and perfect body and health. Beginning on the day after the New Moon in October-November, and continuing through to the 6th day of the Waxing Moon, you can readily connect and utilize the energy from the Pleiades. In Tiruchendur Devotees numbering about 5 lakhs will participate in the above festival. On this festival occasion devotees are fast for all six days. On the sixth day Surasamharam is demonstrated. On the 7th day Thirukkalyanam to Deivanai is celebrated in a grand manner.
The mythology of Muruga is well-known in South India where people adore him as Subramanya, the lance-wielding son of Lord Shiva. In North India, he is known as ‘Skanda’. The similarities are evident in other cultures too.
The Vasanta festival in tiruchendur is an annual festival of ten days in the month of Chittirai (April-May). Senthil-Nayagar, the utsavar processional deity of Subrahmanyam with his consorts Valli and Teyvayānai, are taken from their sanctum in the temple to the Vasanta Mantapa on the giri-prakāra which is suitably decorated with festoons for the occasion and made specially cool with waters filled in the trough which runs around the pedestal on which the deities are placed. It is an enjoyable and pleasant festival, wherein only the blessed who gather there have communion with the deity without much of a crowd.
The high point of Kanda Sashti, of course, is on the sixth day when the Surasamharam or ‘Destruction of the Titan’ takes place. At many Murugan temples this is ritually re-enacted, but nowhere is it re-enacted on such a scale as at Tiruchendur, where the actual battle is believed to have taken place in pre-history. On that day, half a million devotees descend upon Tiruchendur to witness the final shoot-out on the vast beachfront. Nowadays the event is also telecast on Indian radio and television for millions more to see.
There are 6 particular vortexes of Murugan energy that become especially activated during Skanda Sashti. These are known as the ‘Arupadai Veedu’ or the 6 Battle Stations of Muruga.
The six Arupadai Veedu of Lord Muruga is:
Tirupparamkundram
Tiruchendur
Tiruvavinankudi (Palani)
Tiruverakam (Swami Malai)
Kundruthoraadal (Tiruttani and several other hills) and
Pazhamuthircholai
The worshippers who have taken a vow place their offerings during festival and other days.
The worshippers undergo severe fast and take Kavadi, Palkudam, offer Abishekam etc. Golden Chariot procession, Chandana Labanam, Dharabhishegam, Dharahomam are performed by worshippers in fulfillment of their vows.
