Maruti Ertiga: Versatility at rock bottom price
On Thursday, the Indian Automotive sector saw a ‘Dawn of New Era’ with the launch of breathtaking Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) Maruti Ertiga at a spine-tingling price. With that, the leading experts and reviewers of auto industry have openly accredited that Maruti has again got all grounds for merriment. The gripping introductory price revealed by Maruti has smacked the minds of its competitors in the MPV segment, where till now, there was nothing called– ‘Compact MPV’, instead it was considered as synonym for ‘hugely built cabin’– that needs a playground to park.
The fun begins with INR 5.89 Lakh for the base 7-seater petrol model that moves up to INR 7.30 Lakh for top model. While diesels variants take off from INR 7.30 Lakh and end up to INR 8.45 Lakh (all prices are of ex-showroom, Delhi). The crucial part here, apart from tempting price-tag, is the remarkable fuel efficiency that it delivers. Moreover, the pricing is so lucrative–where other contenders open up, Maruti Ertiga closes with feature-loaded high end models. With all this, Maruti MPV can be rated as the ‘affordable yet elegant’ car in its class.
Let’s take a look at the current price offering by its arch rivals in the segment.
Mahindra Xylo:
Mahindra Xylo D2, base version, comes for INR 7.47 Lakh—Maruti Ertiga stands at INR 5.89 Lakh, if compared to diesel run LDI also–it is nearly 17,000 costlier. But the cheerful aspect here is that you enter the segment with under INR 6 Lakh, irrespective of engine. While the top end model of Xylo reads INR 10.47 Lakh.
Toyota Innova:
This expensive Toyota MPV initiates its price for base model long after Maruti Ertiga wraps up its offering with top end model ZDI at INR 8.45 Lakh, while Innova is tagged at INR 9.14 Lakh (base)—difference of around INR 70,000 whereas, the high end Toyota model goes up to more than INR 13.54 Lakh. With the cost one top end, a buyer can purchase to mid variants of Maruti Ertiga.
Chevrolet Tavera:
It was the cheapest and featureless MPV available in major & metro cities with price reading nearly INR 6.50 Lakh, but soon after BSIV norms coming in place it had to replace it with a costlier BSIV version. Maruti Ertiga will now take care of the utility purpose here with its exceptionally affordable price.
Mahindra Mini Xylo:
The impending Mahindra hatchback cum mini-MPV will have a tough road, when it is launched by late this year. If this car is launched in the MPV segment then the fight will be an interesting head-on, as this time the battle will be fought on even grounds. The price and features will play a central role here. Also, till its debut, Mahindra will be aware about few shortcomings of Ertiga, which don’t seem to be.
Ford B-Max:
US auto giant’s globally acclaimed MPV will provide an apt threat to Ertiga with its exclusive design engineering and modern interiors with feature filled dashboard at front together with advanced EcoBoost engine. But it will be difficult for Ford to promote it with right price. The Ford MPV is slated to debut in India by amid or by end of 2012.
