Parent Central – Are Genius Children Born or Nurtured?
The English dictionary defines the word ‘genius’ as a person with exceptional intellectual and creative power. Most geniuses are inborn, though it is not rare for some to cultivate the traits of a genius, as they grow older. Inborn geniuses are often termed as child prodigies, and many such prodigies go on to achieve greatness in their later years.
Now the important question here is: are genius children born or nurtured? How do you measure the capabilities of a kid?
Quite a few techniques are used to measure the intelligence of a kid. Intelligent Quotient or IQ is the most popular technique used for this purpose. IQ testing has evolved over the years and new scientific techniques have been added to ensure that all the aspects are covered. Universities across the globe spend time in fine-tuning the IQ test, so that a standard one is created.
The average human IQ is between 90 and 110. Genius children generally have a very high IQ level. Some of the most famous IQ tests include the Stanford-Binet, WISC and Kaufman-ABC tests. These tests can assess the various abilities of a person, including his vocabulary, verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills, comprehension skills, and number recall.
If you analyze the lives of the popular geniuses of our times, like Albert Einstein, you’ll note that they were exceptional in certain aspects of their lives, but below average in others. Therefore, being born a genius may not always guarantee a successful life or career. Intelligent minds need to be nurtured in the right manner.
Children are generally quick learners with sharp memories. It is often seen that various factors influence children during their early years. It sometimes depends on the parents to whom the kids are born. The atmosphere of the household and the neighborhood also contributes to how kids with sharp mental capacities shape up.
Educational institutions can also influence the growth of a genius. Gifted children need to be nurtured with care, just like normal kids. It is a challenge to both parents and teachers to handle them, as every child is born with some exceptional traits.
More importantly, parents should be able to identify the inherent talents in their children and help them enhance these skills. Even gifted kids need to be identified for their skills and groomed, so that they grow up leading the life that they desire. Children should be allowed to grow up in an environment where free and creative thinking prevails, as this will help them shape their intellect.
With the right kind of teaching and a proper environment, it is not impossible to transform average or above average kids into genius children.
