Delhi University admissions: the cut-off quandary
Talking on a general note, majority of us are confused by the cut-off system. As lay men, we understand it as “the minimum percentage of marks required for getting into our desired college/course”. It denotes the least percentage point that will be accepted by a college for a given course. Well, the detailed terminology of the cut-off game is too vivid for just a school-passed student to grasp. It’s just a number game. The numbers on your score card matches with the numbers on the cut-off list and there you get admitted into the college of your choice.
With the commencement of the result-announcing season, the battle for college admissions is on. Leading the list of the best varsities inIndia, Delhi University (DU), with its army of colleges strewn across the city, is geared up for the admission season that has begun from June 4. When are the cut -offs coming out? What is the expected cut-off for a particular course? How many cut-off lists will be announced by a particular college? These questions are baffling students all over the country seeking admission in DU colleges. The unpredictable high cut-offs of DU have no limits which was quite evident from last year’s 100 % cut-off followed by Sri Ram College Of Commerce. It’s quite obvious that like in previous years, popular colleges with popular courses will be filled from their cut-offs of 90s this time as well. So, one should be prepared for the fight of 90 and 90 point something.
The class 12 results of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) which were declared on May 28 showed a steep rise in the number of high scorers. As per the statistical data, over 28,000 students got above 90 %. This implies that cut-offs for college admissions in Delhi University are set to go higher this year. For now, when DU has announced the date for its first list and all the details for admissions for the academic session of 2012-13 are out, the university has come out with dates of the prospective cut-offs.
A total of five cut-off lists will be prepared this year with the first cut-off to be announced on June 26. Students will get three days’ time to complete their Admission Procedure in Delhi University (DU) 2012 after declaration of each cut-off list. The three-day margin will start from the day the cut-offs are announced. The remaining four cut-off lists will be out on June 29, July 3, July 6 and July 10 respectively.
This anxiety voyage experienced by students cannot be understood by their parents. The high cut-off lists, the parents’ high expectations, the big dreams, the high goals engulf a student in high complexities. The series of confusion and pressure a student goes through in the whole process cannot be understood unless faced directly. Pulkit Agarwal, topper from Amity International School, Noida, who scored 97 %, is not confident about getting admission into his dream college. “It is disappointing to see myself getting worried about admission in Delhi University despite scoring above 90 %. But the cut-offs are bound to go higher compared to last year with so many of us getting above 90,” said Anish Kumar Govil from Delhi Public School, Mathura Road, who scored 95.4 % and aims to pursue Economics Honours from DU.
