Restrooms And Fear Of Vomit — Do Not Mix

The phobia called emetophobia, in simple terms the fear of throwing up is a crippling phobia which affects many people. But because sufferers are ashamed over being afraid of this, it is usually held secret, and so few people are aware that this condition even exists. In fact, it’s estimated to be the 5th most common phobia. Cures can be found, but science knows little about it.
The fear sneaks in to every aspect of an emetophobic person’s daily activities, this is because it seriously limits their ability to calmly perform normal activities like the rest of the population can. It is unimaginable to a person who is not emetophobic to understand how large an impact it leaves on a person’s life – it can completely take it over.
When an emetophobic person walks into a public restroom, they do not see a restroom. He or she sees a place where many others very probably have been right before her, and some of them might have gotten sick. Thoughts jump around wildly for an emetophobia sufferer. They are afraid that the person who visited a stall before them might have had a serious disease. Because if they also picked it up, she might get ill and vomit. That is the recipe for huge distress.
Everything in a restroom can be a source of distress – the door handles. The people who have touched it might have had serious illnesses. Even the sink – it could be that somebody vomited into the sink, leaving it full of germs. What if while being in a stall, someone else runs up into the restroom and throws up in the next stall?
This and others are just some examples of the kind of pressure which emetophobes face even while doing things that appear to us mundane and doable. But to someone who absolutely does not stand any threat of vomiting or simply sickness, it can often be traumatic.
