Pune – The Oxford of East, has reputation of good place to study since English Rule. At present there are some sixty Engineering colleges in and around Pune city. Most of them are privately managed self financed institutions. Only two engineering colleges of them are government run.
1. College of Engineering, Pune
COEP’s precursor, The Poona Engineering Class and Mechanical School was opened in July 1854, its aim being to provide suitable instruction for subordinate officers in the Public Works Department. The School was situated in Bhawani Peth, Poona , and the accommodation consisted of three small detached houses for teaching purposes and a separate house for the Principal.
In June 1865 Mr. Theodore Cooke who held that appointment for 28 years was appointed Principal. The foundation stone of the new college was laid by His Excellency the Governor, Sir Bartle Frere, on the 5th August 1865.
College was affiliated to University of Bombay in 1866. In 1868 the College moved to the New Buildings.
2. Vishwakarma Institute of Technology, Pune
Vishwakarma Institute of Technology, Pune popularly known as VIT Pune, is one of the best Private Engineering Colleges in Western Part of the country. VIT Pune was established by BARCT (Bansilal Ramanth Agarwal Charitable Trust) in the year 1983. VIT Pune is affiliated to Pune University, financed and run by the BARCT. Within 20 years of establishment it became one of the premier institutes in the state amongst 200 other engineering colleges in Pune. According to Indian mythology, ‘Vishwakarma’ was a divine architect-engineer. It is believed that He fashioned this world with His rare engineering skill. The Trust adopted this name with a vision to develop engineers of high caliber, who could take up challenges of any type of an engineering job and make it a grand success, guided by originality and professionalism.
3. Maharashtra Institute of Technology, Pune
Maharashtra Institute of Technology, popularly known as MIT – Pune, was established my MAEER in the year 1983. MIT Pune is the first private engineering college in Maharashtra State, and still remains at top rank after three decades. Today MIT’s Chemical Engineering, Petro-Chemical Engineering departments are considered as the best departments in the Maharashtra. It is worth mentioning that in appreciation of the work carried out by MIT Pune under the banner of World Peace Centre in championing the cause of promoting the Value Based Universal Education System for spreading the message of peace in the society, based on the appropriate blending of science, technology and spirituality, UNESCO, Paris bestowed the World Peace Centre, MAEER’s MIT, Pune, India with an UNESCO Chair for Human Rights, Democracy, Peace and Tolerance on 12th May 1998.
4. Pune Institute of Computer Technology, Pune
Pune Institute of Computer Technology (PICT), Pune was established in 1983, and is one of the leading institutes in Information Technology education and research. PICT is focused on creating versatile engineers who can apply their knowledge and skills anywhere in the world. The college is well known as a respected institute for UG programmes in Computer Engineering, Information Technology Engineering and Electronics & Telecom Engineering. The college also runs P.G Programmes in Computer Engineering, Information Technology and Microwave Engineering.
5. Sinhgad College of Engineering, Vadgaon, Pune
Sinhgad College of Engineering (SCOE) was established in the year 1996 – 1997 offering 4 – years degree courses in Information Technology, Computer, Electronics & Telecommunication, Mechanical, Chemical, Civil Engineering and Production Engineering.
All the above courses are approved by All India Council Of Technical Education (AICTE), accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA), New Delhi and affiliated to University of Pune. The Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), Maharashtra State, Mumbai has awarded “A” grade to the college.
