Cairns, Australia is a popular scuba dive travel destination with some of the best Great Barrier Reef diving and snorkeling available .Thousands of tourists are ferried out everyday by the giant catamarans to snorkel and scuba dive the various offshore reefs and join in the various marine activities offered.
Agincourt Ribbon Reefs.
A pair of permanently moored pontoons, owned by Quicksilver Cruises, are moored on the Agincourt Reefs, giving access to numerous quality scuba sites.The platforms are very well organised and safety proceedures for snorkeling and scuba diving are among the highest in the industry. The Channels offer breathtaking swim-throughs and caves, while The Gardens are renowned for their exceptional abundance of brightly-coloured reef fish.Blue Wonder is an amazing drift dive to beyond 40 m, while Nursery Bommie is a spectacular bommie where pelagic fish gather to feed.
Saxon Reef.
Saxon Reef offers some great diving and snorkelling locations. The shallows shelter a host of all the usual reef fish; frequently observed are goatfish, pufferfish, damsels and butterflyfish. Dropping to 30 m are lots of walls, broken up by caves and gutters, which are covered with an incredible variety of coral and other undersea invertebrates. These are great places to see turtles, reef sharks and schools of spanish mackeral.
Broken Patches.
The pinnacles of Broken Patches, varying in depth from 10 to 25 m are plastered with colourful corals and thousands of reef fish. A site known as Paradise Reef is an excellent place to see large pelagic fish and reef sharks.
Flynn Reef.
The pinnacles and hard coral gardens are quality dive sites at Flynn Reef. Gordon’s Mooring, where a number of pinnacles attract large numbers of reef and pelagic species, is one of the best.
Milln Reef.
Numerous quality dive sites are found at Milln Reef, a popular dive boat destination. Whale Bommie is an impressive pinnacle, and very healthy coral gardens are found at Club 10 and the Swimming Pool. Sharks, trevally and mackerel gather at the Three Sisters, a group of invertebrate-covered bommies.
Moore Reef.
Moore Reef has a number of beautiful hard coral gardens that are worth a visit, but the ultimate diving is along the reef wall. Here an assortment of gorgonians, sea whips and soft corals cling to the wall to depths of 30m. A great selection of reef and pelagic fish frequent the vicinity.
Sudbury Reef.
Shallow coral gardens and walls to 35 m can be explored on Sudbury Reef. Reef fish are everywhere. It is also possible to come accross green turtles and giant gropers.
