Introducing the 4G63 Engine from Mitsubishi
The two liter Mitsubishi turbocharged variation of the 4G6 series is inarguably the best engine that has even been produced by Mitsubishi. The 4G63T was introduced way back in 1988 and is also known as the 4G63.
The engine construction and design was made by some of the finest engineers in the world. It has a cast iron block structure that can house up to 4 cylinders at a time and the approximate 2000cc displacement is achieved by the presence of 85 millimeter bore and 88 millimeter stroke. The head of the engine is composed of a dual over head cams system with a 4 valve heady per cylinder. The TD05H-14G turbocharger was integrated into the engine to provide a front air to air inter cooling system. The first version of the 4G63t had an output horse power of 200hp with an RPM of 6000.
Mitsubishi continued to use their line of Galant VR-4 models until the end of 1992 with some minor adjustments here and there all the while. The last 4G63 engine that ran in the Galant VT-4 models was rated at output of nearly 240 hp because of the presence of a slightly bigger turbocharger.
Although the 4g63 engine was continued to be used in a variety of Mitsubishi models until the year 2006, it is most famous for being the driving power behind one of the most successful range of cars from Mitsubishi – The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution series. The 4G63T engine was present all the way from the first to the last model of the Lancer Evolution – from Lancer Evolution 1 to Lancer Evolution 9. The design and specifications of the 4g63t engines continued to evolve with the Evolution models but the basic design and construction of the engine was not modified in any way at all. The engines used in the different models of the Lancer Evolution series can be summed up into three eras or generations.
• The first generation of the 4G63T engines were used in the first three models of the Lancer Evolution series which included Evo 1, 2 and 3. The first generation engines had reworked exhaust and intake ports along with new injectors, bigger turbochargers and lighter connection rods. The power output of the engine was raised to around 265 hp. The compression ratio for the engine used in the first three series was 8.5:1.
• The second generation 4G63T models were used in the Evo 4, 5 and 6 series. The most notable upgrade in this model was the modification in the cam drive system of the engine. The design of the engine was basically modified a little bit as the cam drive system was moved to the left and the flywheel was moved to the right hand portion of the engine.
• The third generation 4G63 model was released with the launch of Evo 7 in the year 2001. Just like the last upgrades and models, the new 4G63T model also had some crucial upgrades and modifications which made the engine’s performance overall better. The engine was further modified with the launch of the Evo 8 model with a new and improved water cooling system being used with wide water passages to improve the heat circulation.
