Education concerns for Au Pairs
When it comes to completing the education requirement, some au pairs are excited to take classes, and others view it as a necessary requirement for the program. Without minimum education credits, AU pairs can’t work for long and they have to complete their credits on all costs if they want to stay in job.
Our au pair Mia from Au Paire Care agency is one of the excited ones – just a few months into her year, and she is working on her last 30 hours to fulfill her educational requirement. The Department of State requires 6 credits or 60 hours. So it is up to Au pairs that how they plan for completing their credits. For her first 3 credits, Mia went to a weekend course held exclusively for au pairs. These are held throughout the country during different part of year. In order to complete her last 3 credits, Mia found English as a Second Language course through a local accredited community school that is free of charge. This is a huge bonus for all of us -Mia does not have to pay out of pocket any costs, and we were able to keep our share of the educational stipend below $500. Thus, it did not affect either Mia or our expenses to a great degree which kept all of us happy. The best part for an au pair from any Au Paire Care like Mia is that she will be able to take this class as long as she wants -she will certainly earn more than 60 credits, and will gain valuable experience in English that will help her in her career in future and she will be able to stand on her feet as she will be able to apply for better jobs in near future.
With some creativity and searching, Mia was able to make the most of the educational component of the program and find courses that perfectly into everyone’s schedule, budget and plans. She could attend classes when we are available to look after our children and this would enable her to enhance her English skills which will help her in a big manner.
