Prepare Your Preppy Style For Summer
You may not have been educated at an illustrious and expensive private boarding school, and you may not be air to a multimillion pound company but you can still get that preppy look without breaking your meager bank.
The preppy style is all about timeless classics, outfits that warrant repeat wearing as long as you make it a little bit different each time with varied accessories. Drop the snobbish sneering for a more approachable veneer through light colours and bright smiles, the preppy look does not need to come with an icy demeanor. Mix up some pricey garments with highstreet pieces that are available at more reasonable costs. For example although one Ralph Lauren polo shirt will set you back a couple of hundred pounds, you can deck yourself out in chinos and boating shoes that aren’t made by designer labels therefore saving your wallet a lot of heart ache.
If you’re not into your boat shoes then opt for the flat ballet pump or men’s sandals instead which are inherently preppy and are always fashionable in summer. When prepping your preppy look ensure you have an eye for detail as this will make all the difference. Keep the colours simple, garishly vivid will not work and overly complex patterns are also a definite no-no. Your midriff should be covered by a skirt for the ladies or either khakis or plain Bermuda shorts for the guys.
As we’ve said before, the polo shirt is an integral feature of any preppy male’s wardrobe, the rule is still the same for the tops as it is for the bottom – plain and simple. Basic colours and basic patterns should be prevalent, your outfit wants to be a sultry whisper, not a thuggish bellow. Ensure all items of clothing are tailored to fit well. When you’re heading out on the town your clothes should be ironed and clean, this should go without saying but is a point that’s often overlooked.
Colours that are always reliable are the softer shades, white, light or navy blue and pastel browns, you can of course be a bit more experimental but try to keep it low key. If there’s a chill in the air in the evening drape a cardigan over your shoulders, or invest in a decent blazer, something understated and sedate should suffice.
Accessorising well is the icing on the cake for the preppy look. Items such as tote bags will set off your outfit perfectly, if you can afford it it’s never a bad idea to buy an LL Bean canvas version. Add a skinny or ribbon belt to your look in a navy and white or navy and red stripe is about as jaunty as you’re allowed to get. For the dames, you could go for a headband, but, aside from a small bow, it should be as plain as possible.
