Cable Lock – A Way To Stop Bicycle Theft
Many countries are encouraging the usage of bicycles inside the cities. There are some universities and organizations that have made the bicycle a mandatory mode of transportation inside their campus. Bicycle usage is being promoted as it reduces fuel consumption and emission of pollutants which causes pollution. Riding a bike is a boon to people who wish to stay healthy and fit.
Why Are Bicycle Locks Needed?
While bicycle parking space in not a problem in most of the places, safety of the bicycle itself is a major concern. The visibility of the parts of the bicycle which can be easily dismantled makes it vulnerable and susceptible to theft. They can be easily picked up and taken away in matter of seconds.
The best way to stop this crime is to lock the bicycle when not in use and also know how to lock it in the right way. There are wide range of locks available in the market of which some are U-lock or D-lock, Cable lock, Chain lock, Wheel lock and Locking skewers. It is required to understand how these locks work to have a safe parking.
U-lock or D-lock:
U-lock is also called as D-lock and is made of rigid metal, which is strong and not easy to break open. These locks can be used to lock the bicycle to another physical object making it difficult to cut open. However if space is available to fit something like a jack in between the bicycle and lock, the jack can produce leverage to break open the lock.
Cable Lock:
Very similar to the chain lock, Cable lock is made of spring cable. When released, these cables coil itself and makes it easier to be carried anywhere. Ideal for low-risk areas, these can be easily cut off with bold cutters. However, these locks are strengthened by using overlapping steel jackets, which are threaded over the cable.
Chain Lock:
Chain locks are those which have chain with a lock attached to it. The strength of the chain depends on the quality of the material used and these do not resist the power tools.
Wheel Lock:
Wheel Locks, which are also called O-locks, basically immobilize the bicycle. The lock is slid between the spokes and the tyre, making the bicycle immobile.
Locking Skewers:
Locking skewers, which are ideal for high-crime areas, are used as additional security measure along with Wheel lock or U-lock. Though easy to use, these Locking skewers needs a special wrench to open it, which may cause some trouble if the wrench is lost.
