Shopping for Women’s Underwear
Women’s underwear has come a long way from the days of pantaloons and corsets, but the purpose mostly remains the same – support. There’s no reason why something cannot be functional and beautiful. Women should feel both supported and sexy in their underwear, comfortable is good too. There’s nothing comfortable about women’s underwear that doesn’t fit properly, but many women are wearing the wrong sizes. Some don’t know better, others can’t find anything that fits properly. Curvaceous women have a hard time. There is a dearth of places to go to buy women’s underwear sized outside of the 34-38 D or E that one finds in most lingerie stores. Department store lingerie sections are mostly functional, not beautiful, and one quickly gets tired of nude or black. There is a plethora of options for women’s underwear – bras, panties, teddies, corsets, bustiers, thongs, bikini, boy shorts, the list goes on. Finding a comfortable and desirable set can take weeks of research. Curvaceous women tend to be restricted in what kind of dresses or tops they wear because finding supportive and comfortable women’s underwear is difficult and expensive. One shouldn’t need to take out a loan to buy underwear for a friend’s wedding.
Lingerie is another area where curvaceous women lack choice – spilling over the top or out the sides of a bra or popping out of a corset does not make anyone feel sexy. “In the store, there’s a teddy, little straps, like spaghetti, it holds me so tight, like handcuffs at night, walking ‘round in women’s underwear” (Rivers, 1993). The song, a parody of “Winter Wonderland”, has a phenomenal, if unintentional insight into the world of women’s underwear. Men rarely, if ever, have to deal with the inherent issues of buying underwear. Waist size is generally the only need a man must fulfill in sizing a set of boxers. Briefs could be trickier, but still a long way from balancing cup size, rib size, and necessary support. Buying a strapless bra is an ordeal for anyone, let alone a woman who is plus sized. Cute little strapless summer dresses are off the list for many curvy women, because buying a bustier is so expensive.
Sports are another area where support is necessary in women’s underwear. Bouncing up and down is uncomfortable at best. Many women have given up working out because they cannot find comfortable underwear that supports them properly. Men sometimes like to buy their women underwear as gifts. Loungewear, sleepwear, or more intimate lingerie are all on the list. Finding an appropriate size is not easy, but a man is a hero if he purchases a sexy and comfortable set that both can enjoy. Women’s underwear is personal, and varies depending on her mood, activity, and budget. A large selection is vital for a woman to purchase sets that make her feel confident and sexy. There are often differences between what a man and a woman perceive as sexy in lingerie. Women want mainly to feel comfortable and attractive. A man’s view is often different. However it plays out, a woman who feels good looks good no matter what she’s wearing.
