Mahindra mulls bringing Mahindra Rexton W to India
Looks have to do a lot with the performance of the car, at-least that is what we Indian believe in which is contrary to the saying ‘never judge a book by its cover’. Something similar has been going through the minds of Mahindra officials who do not seem to be interested in bringing the Mahindra Rexton SUV to India. However a better looking version of the SUV, Mahindra Rexton W which was recently unveiled at the Busan Motor Show could be launched in India. Mahindra had plans to launch the outgoing model of Rexton in India earlier which the auto maker also showcased during the 11th Auto Expo in New Delhi in the month of January. The SUV did not get much appreciation from the crowd majorly due to its conventional design and its peculiar proportions.
This is the reason behind Mahindra mulling to launch Mahindra Rexton W in the Indian car market. The upgraded Rexton W gets a major facelift that enhances its looks, the SUV definitely looks better than its forerunner. The looks have been changed drastically of the SUV, the front fascia has been changed completely with new projector headlights with LEDs, reworked grille glutted with chrome, a fresh bumper and wing mirrors with LED-turn indicators. The rear also has been revivified, wheel-arches complement well with the rear bumper and the submissive redesigned tail lights cover the back end pretty well.
Apart from the new design the Rexton W has also been bestowed with a new turbo diesel engine made by Ssangyong. This new engine is called the e-XDi200 active, it is a 2 litre in-line four pot engine which will be a replacement for the current motor borrowed by Mercedes. Synchronized to a 5-speed gearbox, this new powertrain will come with variable geometry turbocharger and a common rail direct injection, both these technology mutually will help pushing a maximum power of 155 PS and a high torque figure of 360 Nm. With the new and improved Mahindra Rexton W, both Mahindra and SsangYong will have a better opportunity to to collide head on with brands like Toyota and Ford which offer SUVs in the range of Rs 20 lakh. Nothing has been revealed by the company regarding Mahindra Rexton price, however details will keep coming in slowly.
Mahindra is a known SUV maker in India, it has some of the most popular SUVs in India which are doing very well in terms of monthly sales. Mahindra Scorpio and Mahindra XUV 500 are the two star sellers of Mahindra & Mahindra which are giving a tough fight to other SUVs in India. Mahindra Scorpio recently completed 10 years in the domestic market and till date the SUV is a hot seller in the domestic market. As per Mahindra & Mahindra close to 109 Mahindra Scorpio units are sold every day, while a total of4 lakh units have been sold across the globe within ten years.
With Scorpio, Mahindra forayed in the passenger car segment with Scorpio SUV. Prior to Scorpio launch, the auto maker was known as a tractor manufacturer. Mahindra Scorpio project started in the year 1997 and around 120 engineers were put to the task of developing Scorpio. After a detailed research of five years, Mahindra Scorpio was launched in India on June 20th, 2002 at a starting price of Rs 5 lakhs for the base model while the high variant of Mahindra Scorpio was introduced at a price of Rs 7 lakhs. Scorpio also received an unprecedented response and garnered around 1000 bookings at that time. After ten years of Scorpio’s launch the company is now thinking to bring a new version of Scorpio which is expected to launch by 2014.
