Kurnool, the Heart of Andhra
Kurnool is well known as a centre of medical education in Andhra Pradesh. This town is at the entrance to the arid and backward region of Rayalseema. This town is shaking off the tag of being backward as large numbers of hardworking students migrate to foreign countries for higher education.
Kurnool has history that goes back to many thousands of years. Though it does not get much rain, the waters of the river Tungabadhra on which stands provides life giving water to this town and its surroundings. This river can be spotted on a Kurnool map easily. Intensive cultivation has brought prosperity to this place.
Because of the presence of the river, the town was populated by trades-people in the days of yore who found the town pleasant. The name Kurnool is associated with the oil sold by merchants in olden days. Stone cutters who were adept at making temples would pass this way regularly to collect stone from the quarries.
On their way they would halt here to carry repairs on their carts. They bought oil from the merchants to grease the cartwheels. This oil was connected in some way to the name by which Kurnool was referred to in olden days. This place has come a long way from those days.
Kurnool has a long and intense summer. In winter, nights can become quite cold. Days are very pleasant. The temples and mosques in the town attract the religious. The rulers of this town were often Muslims giving it a strong Muslim flavour. There are several temples too dotting the place. Nearby towns too have temples. It is possible to go from Srisailam to Kurnool by bus. Srisailam is also a temple town. If you look at a Kurnool map, you will see that Srisailam is not far away.
The railway station is not far from the town. Several trains pass this way. Just like from Srisailam to Kurnool, to other places also there are excellent buses. Visitors who come stay in one of the comfortable hotels in the city.
A number of students study in the large number of colleges that dot the town. To provide food to them there is many restaurants that provide food. Kurnool is famous for its meat preparations as it has a strong Muslim culture as the result of the Muslim rulers who controlled This area used to be called backward at one time but now it is not so.
