Building My First Website
I had contemplated hard and long to build my own website? I have been in the realty business for a long time, but due to lack of time and even lack of interest I couldn’t get my website designed. One fine day I decided to sit down with a pen and paper and plan my first website which is now bringing me good business. Thankfully my first experiment in this field didn’t go hay wire.
The Realization:
Today, when every business is seen flourishing online, I thought of taking the plunge too even though it was a conscious decision. I wanted to reach every property or real estate owner in the country as well as every professional in this field. I realized that there can’t be a better way to do so other than having a website of my own. Realty business is a huge marketplace where buyers and sellers meet, negotiate and finalise the deals. So, I had to build a website which caters to the needs of everyone related to real estate business.
The Execution
I needed great hands in the form of a web designer to turn my dreams into reality. I had to find the right one, so I started hunting for an experienced web designer in various job portals. It took me couple of days to find the web designer. We sat and discussed for few minutes and he understood what I actually want. He drew a rough sketch of how the layout, graphics and navigation would be. I realized then and there that he was the right one for this website design project.
Page Layout and Content Creation:
The web designer whom I had hired started working on my website the very next day once the job contract was finalized. He started with the layout of the home page, which is as vital as the content in any website. He ensured that the most important topics or tabs are presented on the top of the page. Presentation is important, so I instructed him to put only the important tabs at the top. I didn’t want the web page to look cluttered anyways.
Once the layout was done, the textual and graphical content were added. The designer added a few graphics very intelligently. It was his duty to make sure that the page opens fast in all browsers. It took about 25 days for the designer to get the website designed, but I had to make sure that other activities like SEO and SEM are also implemented. Thankfully, my designer had the basic knowledge of SEO like meta-tags and page title. Finally, the website was ready to go live after 35 days of hard work.
“All is well that ends well”. I was quite satisfied with the look and feel of the website; however, regular website maintenance and content addition were things that I had to worry about. I signed a contract with the web designer to ensure that the website is monitored, enhanced or upgraded on time. I learned a lot during this website building exercise.
