Horsley Hills – An idyllic holiday

Horsley Hills is a gorgeous summer hill resort situated in the state of Andhra Pradesh. At an elevation of 1,290m, Horsley Hills provides a panoramic view of the deep valleys below and the misty mountains around. Strategically located about 140 km from Bangalore, Horsley Hills is visited by the urban crowds from the nearby cities for its salubrious climate and picturesque beauty.

Horsley Hills was earlier known as Yenugu Mallamma Konda and is believed by the locals that a little girl Mallamma who was taken care of by the elephants lived in the jungles here who had healing powers. The locals built a temple here in her honour believing she was a goddess. The present name was given to it by a British officer W D Horsley, who was so impressed by the beauty of this place that he built his summer bungalow here and named the region after himself.

Horsley Hills is ideal for a quiet and peaceful holiday with nothing much to do except spend some quality time with loved ones. At nights the temperature comes down and many resorts host lively bonfire parties at night.

Among the few attractions in and around Horsley Hills, Mallamma temple, Lake Gangotri, Highview seeing place, Gaibandha, Environmental park, Horsley Hills Museum and Kaundinya Wildlife Sanctuary located 87 km away are most popular. Horsley Hills is also one of the few places in the country where one can indulge in zorbing. Other adventure activities one can do here are repelling and trekking.

A sweet smelling flower known in the local language as Sampangi is found all around this region and spreads its fragrance in the entire place. Kaundinya Wildlife Sanctuary is another prominent attraction of the place, which is home to various mammals, carnivores, herbivores, reptiles and birds. Four-horned antelopes, sambars, hares, porcupines, jungle cats and wild boars can be seen in the sanctuary. The Mallamma Temple, dedicated to Goddess Mallamma, is an ancient shrine located on the top of Horsley Hills.

Environmental Park is popular for the spectacular scenic view it provides and the Eastern and Western vantage points here provide excellent scenes of sunset and sunrise from here.

Gurram Konda is popular among tourists for a special ride to the top on horseback and a small fort there called Mahal. Other attractions on the way to Horsley Hills are Mogasale Marri, Kummara Palli, Vepuri Kota and Kothakota.

The forest area of the place is endowed with a variety of flora like shikakai, beedi leaves, red sander, reeta, amla, bay leaf, sandalwood and blue gum, among others. The region is inhabited by the Chenchu tribe and tourists can enjoy walking and trekking along the trails that pass through tribal villages.
