Reasons To Switch To Reusable Grocery Bags

If you have been into almost any store in recent history you will notice that more people than ever are using reusable grocery bags instead of the disposable plastic one that have been used for decades. In fact it has become very trendy to use cloth bags instead of plastic. Even if for some reason you are not interested in being trendy, there are several good reasons for switching to cloth bags including how much better they are for the environment.

According to recent research done in California, consumers use an average of 600 plastic shopping bags every second of the day.  Most of these bags end up in the landfills or blowing around loose in the state, it is estimated that the state spends $8.5 million in taxpayers’ money to run various programs that help to deal with this problem. On top of this a further $25 million is spent running the landfills that must cope with these tons of plastic bags when they finally end up there, these problems make the use of reusable grocery bags a much more sensible option.

If you use plastic shopping bags instead of reusable grocery bags you also put many different species of animals at risk, especially marine wildlife. These plastic bags wind their way down through the rivers and streams where they end up in the oceans and are ingested by many of the different sea animals such as the sea turtle who then die from being unable to eat and die. Other sea creatures such as the plankton that feeds so many other species are also being killed off by the bags. The number of plastic particles in the oceans now outnumbers plankton by a ratio of close to 6 to 1.

Many proponents of using the plastic bags over the reusable grocery bags argue that recycling these plastic bags is helping. The real truth is that it costs far more to recycle one ton of these plastic bags than they are worth on the open commodities market. When you are faced with numbers like this, is it any wonder that less than 2% of these bags ever actually get recycled? This means that 98% of them still end up either in the landfills or elsewhere in the environment.

With all of this bad news there is a very simple solution, all you need to do as a retailer is to stop using plastic shopping bags and switch to nothing but reusable grocery bags for your customers.
