Karnataka – The Land of Diversity

Karnataka is a state in the south western part of India which comprises of 30 districts. Stretching from Belgaum in the north till Mangalore in the south, Karnataka has a wide range of landscapes with varied features. Blessed with coastal regions on its borders and with mountains, valleys and farmlands in the interiors, the state of Karnataka also is a major IT hub in India. The name Karnataka is derived from the Kannada words Karu and Nadu which means elevated land. Bangalore, the capital city of Karnataka is also its largest one.

Southern Karnataka including Mysore is known as the Cauvery Basin. The region around Bangalore is the Central Karnataka. The coastal region is known as Karvali. The rest of Karnataka is divided into Northern Karnataka and North Western Karnataka. Bangalore, Belgaum, Hubli, Mangalore, Mysore and Sakleshpur are the main cities in Karnataka.

So wide a state, Karnataka has a long list of tourist sites. The most important places of tourist interest in Karnataka are, Bandipur National Park in Chamarajamagar, Belur, Bylakupi, Chunchi, Gokarna, Udupi, Shringeri, Hampi, Nandi Hills, Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary, Shimoga, Shravanabelagola, Jog Falls and Chikmangalur.

The climate of Karnataka varies with its varied features of the landscapes. The coastal region is hot and humid whereas the hill stations are cool and windy. Towards the interiors of Karnataka, the climate is mostly dry and hot.

Karnataka is the fourth most popular tourist destinations in India. The state owes a good amount of its revenue from tourism in virtue of its varied geographical features and long history. An array of ancient sculptures, temples, historical monuments, unexplored forests, scenic hill ranges, commercial modern cities and enchanting beaches await tourists in addition to sites popular for eco-tourism like Madikeri, Kudramukh and Agumbe.

There are a number of world heritage centers in Karnataka like Hampi in the Bellari district of Karnataka and the 8th century monuments at Pattadakkal. The ruins of a number of dynasties like Rashtrakuda Dynasty and the Kadamba Dynasty can be found in many parts of Karnataka. Ancient forts, Buddhist and Jain Temples, National Parks and wildlife Sanctuaries are the other attractions of Karnataka. Karnataka is an emerging health care tourism center now.

Karnataka’s main airports include Bangalore, Mangalore, Hubli, Belgaum, Hampi, Bellari and Mysore. A long network of railway line runs in and around Karnataka. The coastal regions of Karnataka can be reached by using the Konkan Railway. Bangalore is extensively connected with inter-city railway lines. Karnataka has 11 ports and the New Mangalore port is the major one. A number of National Highways and State Highways run across the state of Karnataka. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation and a number of private bus services are available for traveling across Karnataka via road.
