Coimbatore is the second largest city in the state of Tamil Nadu. For many years now, it has been a hub of technology with small and big industries flourishing. Coimbatore is also known as Kovai. People taking the Mettupalayam route to the hill station of Ooty often pass through Coimbatore. Coimbatore was part of the Kongu Nadu area in the olden days. It had a distinct cuisine as unlike the surrounding areas it was arid. During summer, one can find many tourists stopping at Coimbatore on their way to Ooty. From Ooty to Coimbatore, the drive is only about 2 hours long. There is a train from Coimbatore to Mettupalayam which is at the foothills of the Nilgiris. From Mettupalam, you can take the mountain railway. While driving from Ooty to Coimbatore, you get to see several waterfalls.

The Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park is only 38 km away. Here you can forget the stress and strains of modern life. Make bookings well in advance if you wish to stay at the jungle lodge. The Singanallur Lake is also nearby and there you can see water birds that migrate here in winter.
