Sunspel’s associations with both the large and small screen
From its establishment as a textile manufacturer in 1860 to its present status as a specialist maker of innovative but traditionally-styled quality clothing, Sunspel (http://www.sunspel.com) has always worked hard to achieve the right combination of dashing design and basic wearability. Sunspel has long had a great awareness of the importance of aesthetic appeal, as is borne out by its increasing prominence in the world of film and TV.
As a purveyor of quality British clothing, it may not surprise observers that Sunspel has already established an association with James Bond, with Daniel Craig making the brand’s Riviera polo famous in his first outing as Bond in Casin Royale. Available in colours including black, ivory, navy and russet, the Riviera polo kept 007 cool under pressure with its breathable mesh fabric, while also sporting the tailored fit that makes it a sophisticated choice for weekend dressing.
Sunspel also collaborated with the costume department on Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, with several examples of the brand’s luxury clothing appearing in the film. With a formidable cast of British actors that includes Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, John Hurt and Benedict Cumberbatch, the feature film version of the bestselling novel by John le Carre is a gripping spy thriller set at the height of the Cold War.
Sunspel has also established a link with short films, with the brand, together with Fantastic Man magazine, having presented the celebratory premiere of the latest short film by photographer Alisdair McLellan, Repton Boxing Club, in London in April 2011. The film consisted of reminisces of the childhood and upbringing in the famous club of the young boxer Ryan.
Even ‘off duty’, many of the world’s biggest film stars have seen reason to don Sunspel designer menswear, with the American star of Backbeat, Somewhere and Blade, Stephen Dorff, recently appearing in the Men’s Style pages of The Telegraph wearing the Sunspel classic crew neck T-shirt in black. Craig even made a repeat appearance in Sunspel fashions, being photographed in GQ Magazine in the black crew neck T-shirt.
Putting the brand’s clothing to more practical use, however, was The Wire, Othello and The Devil’s Whore actor Dominic West, who joined the team involved in a spot of hardcore paragliding at 12,000 feet in northern India. For the notoriously cold and extreme weather, Dominic opted for the Sunspel merino base layer that has also been used by polar explorer Ben Saunders, and that has a natural wicking quality that hugs the body while still keeping moisture away.
As it continues to evolve and improve its fashions and fabrics with the benefit of more than one and a half centuries of experience, so Sunspel (http://www.sunspel.com) continues to service independent-minded actors and all other admirers of luxury mens clothing.
