Goa is the smallest state of India, situated along the western part of India in the Konkan region. The state of Goa is bordered by Maharashtra on its north, Karnataka on its east and south and Arabian Sea on its west. Goa became a settlement site of Sumerians around 2200 BC and Indo-Aryan tribes and Dravidians followed them. There were radical changes in the Goan society, when the aboriginal locals and the migrants lived jointly. It is believed that this amalgamation sowed seeds for the unique Goan culture.
In the 3rd century BC, Goa became a part of King Ashoka’s Mauryan Empire. During this period, Goa underwent the influence of Buddhism. Goa witnessed the rise and fall of many empires. Goa also came under the rule of Delhi Sultanate, Vijayanagara Rayas, Bahmani Sultanate and AdilShahis before coming under the rule of Portuguese in the 16th century. By mid-18th century, most of the regions of today’s Goa were under the direct rule of Portuguese. Of ‘Estado da India Portuguesa’, the Portuguese colonies in India, Goa was the largest territory.Post Indian Independence, Goa was annexed to India through Operation Vijay in 1961, along with Daman & Diu. Goa remained a Union Territory up to 1987 until it became the 25thstate of India.
