Garden must dos for winter

Things to do in the garden now it is that time of year again, you will find here a few simple tips to be getting on with but there are endless jobs you need to get done, quite a task for those of you with a large garden.

October is often a good time for painting your trellis and fences, get a good sprayer from your local diy shop as these can save you a lot of time when your having to paint a large fence, hours in fact, a brush simply wont do the job anymore when you can use a cheap low cost sprayer, and the time spent could well be used more productively in the garden.

Dont stop picking your fruit until they no longer ripen.

Aerate your lawn and brush sharp sand into spiked holes, and dont forget to give your lawn some autumn feed as this is about your last chance to do this, dont forget, you will have to continue to mow your lawn but you may have to raise the blades a little in your mower.

Rake up those fallen leaves and put them on the compost heap, cant waste them can we.

If you have roses, keep dead heading them as they can actually flower until Christmas time, this is another nice thing about roses as they are quite hardy.

If you are thinking about planting some conifers and trees, perennials, shrubs or roses then now would be a good time and also other types of the spring flowering varieties such as pansies and wallflowers etc and bring in any dahlia tubers but carry on with any shrub cuttings.

If you have any hardy perennials then this is also a good time for dividing them.

Thinking of planting spring cabbage? now is a good time but you must cover with a net unless you really want to feed the pigeons, and dont forget about your autumn garlic and onion sets.

Due to the coming frost this time of year, you may as well dig up any remaining potatoes.

An obvious tip that so many of us forget about is to put a little grease of some kind on any rubber bands you have on your trees.

Any tender plants wont last very long if you just leave them out so bring them into the greenhouse.

This is a good time to give the glass in your greehouse a good clean ready for the following spring, that will be the last thing you want to think about.

Lining your greenhouse with bubble polythene will help you to conserve some heat for the winter months.

Dont wait until you actually need to use your heaters to find out they dont work, check them now.

Water less now and try and only water in the mornings but do remember the elusive hot days when you may need to open your ventilators.

Throw out any summer bedding plants when they have finished flowering.

There are an endless list of things to do in the garden and the jobs to do never seem to end.

I asked a recently retired friend if he is bored now he has retired and he said he spends so much time doing things in the garden that need doing, he cant believe he ever had time to even go to work.
