Usefulness of the Fundus Camera
The fundus camera is diagnostic ophthalmic equipment which has improved and has become e a very valuable tool in the ophthalmic diagnostics. For someone like me who has been just out after completing my internship, the Fundus Camera is very valuable ophthalmic equipment which is well within the reach of a starter like me. As compared to other fanciful and complicated diagnostic equipments, the fundus or retinal camera provides colourful, contrasted or angiographic images of the retina.
Most of the diagnostic ophthalmic equipment which is used today requires a team of paramedical staff to operate. However what I found useful with the fundus or the retinal camera is that it is incredibly simple and could be operated by the examining Doctor with relative ease. There is no need for any technicians to take a picture and then it to be reviewed by the specialist doctor later. The doctor can easily take the photographs without asking for the patient to come for a separate sitting.
When I started my practice, I was short on finances and was in a fix about which diagnostic ophthalmic equipment I should invest. Fortunately some wised advice from my seniors who suggested me to go for the Fundus Camera first before settling down with my practice and go for other costlier ophthalmic diagnostic equipments. The results of any retinal cameras are almost the same as the more costly equipments. I found the colour performance of these equipments very. What appealed me was the feature which filters out the red light and gives better and sharper images of the blood vessels in the retina. This is particularly important in diabetic retinopathy where the ophthalmologist has to determine the extent of the damage to the retina by the increased sugar levels in the blood.
Right from my days in the Medical College where I was studying medicine, I found very big lacunae in the way we detail the ailment to the patient. Often Doctors simplify the explanation to absurd levels. However we should credit our patients with better intellect levels. The fundus camera is a very helpful aid in explaining the patient about different details of the ailment. For example with the photographs obtained with the retinal camera , I can explain in better details about different diseases like Glaucoma, optic neuritis, pappiledema etc. A better informed patient can take a better decision regarding his body and ailment and also choose the best treatment route. It helps to create a better understanding between the doctor and the patient.
