Mexico, which has been a favoured destination for many US-based automakers and suppliers, is seeing growing investments from Japanese automakers too. As a result, new component production plants are expected to be established in certain key areas such as Baja California in Mexico. The industry is gearing up to regain the one-million units sales mark in 2014, a year when IHS expects annual vehicle sales in Mexico to touch 1.03 million. By 2020, vehicle sales in Mexico are projected to reach 1.3 million units. Vehicle production in Mexico reached a high of 2.1 million units in 2008 but the global financial crisis caused a sharp decline of 28.7% year-on-year in 2009 to 1.49 million units. Since then vehicle production is on recovery path in Mexico, largely driven by a revival in exports with vehicle production increasing 51% to 2.26 million in 2010 and a further 12.8% to a record 2.55 million in 2011 to become the eighth largest vehicle manufacturing country worldwide after China, Japan, US, Germany, South Korea, Brazil and India. IHS Automotive forecast that vehicle production in the country will breach 4.2 million units in 2020.
