Top Five Places to Take Your Au Pair (on the West Coast)
Your au pair didn’t come here to be a tourist, but as Erika mentioned in her last post, investing in the relationship pays immense dividends. Consider the investments you make in your work and your family relationships and it’s no surprise that getting to know your au pair creates a better family dynamic overall. If I were to take a job overseas, I know I’d appreciate help making friends and extra tips on where to visit.
Taking au pairs on vacation can make the trip much easier for you too! When we’ve had an au pair staying with us, we’ve planned at least one vacation during the year that we thought they’d would particularly enjoy. It was always a place we wanted to go too, but knowing that we were sharing a little bit of Americana, and the fact that we’d have help with our wiggly, loud kids, helped us choose our destinations.
(Caveat: These are largely west coast, since that’s where I live.)
1. Lake Tahoe — We rent a cabin near this beautiful alpine lake, summer and/or winter. Au pairs from Au Pair Care have given us the freedom to go mountain biking and skiing on our own. We’ve also put the kids in ski school for a day or two and then our au pairs enjoy their ski days. In the summer, we’ll hike together or go out on the lake.
2. Seattle — This is a little known town to foreigners, but the museums, the harbour, the quirky neighbourhoods, the offbeat culture, and the spectacular coffee make it a fun and surprising place to explore.
3. Yellowstone National Park — If you want to find out how fantastic it is to have an au pair on a road trip, try this. Even if you fly into Wyoming or Montana, Yellowstone is so big; you’ll need a car to get around the park. The geysers, thermal features, and Petrified Forest are other-worldly, and the wildlife is found nowhere else on earth.
4. San Louis Obispo/Pismo Beach — In California, you’ve got to go to the beach. This one, half way between San Francisco and Los Angeles, is less crowded and has better surf. The college town has fun restaurants, hotels, and an unrivalled farmers market.
5. San Francisco — Chances are, your au pair from Au Pair Care has seen San Francisco on TV for years. Show him or her real thing. Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, visit the Painted Ladies, explore the Embarcadero, and take in a museum. For a kid-friendly day, take a double-decker bus tour. You’ll see everything without the hassle of public transportation.
Most of all enjoy getting to know each other. Hopefully someday, you’ll be able to visit her country and her town too. Where are your favourite places to go with your au pairs from Au Pair Care?
