Au Pairs and Travel
This week I heard from an au pair with a question on her DS-2019. “I had hoped to go to get a visa to Canada, but I think there is a problem with my DS,” reported Joy. “My host family moved this year, and Aupair Care had to send me a new DS. The new form is signed, but does not have the stamp I got when I arrived to the U.S. Will this be accepted?” These are some common issues and questions which au pairs generally have to face.
Many au pairs hope to make a trip to Canada (and other countries) during their year, and at Aupair Care we think it is a great idea! Since your DS-2019 is the document that proves that Aupair Care is your sponsor, the travel permission signature is the most important part of the document. Au pairs whose address has changed during their year, or who are issued a new DS for their extension year, are still in good standing and should have no additional restrictions for travel. Thus, it is important that you should stay in good terms with your host family. Only then you can expect them to sign your travel documents and also you should have instil that much faith in them that they are sure that you won’t be miss-utilizing the permission given as more or less they are your guardian during your stay with them.
Though hardly very few au pairs face any travel related problems but ensure that you are planning your visit well ahead at least a month’s time and your host family is aware about the same. Only then you can expect to go as your host family might have to make alternative arrangements when you are away. This requires mutual adjustments on both end and you have to decide those days in which your host family can make alternative arrangements without much hassles. Another recommendation is that you are allowed to stay for couple of weeks once your term with host family expires. You can always go during that period on vacation with your friends as then you are not liable to stay with your host family and look after their kids. Most of au pairs prefer this option as then you don’t have to worry about coming back on time and can always spend couple of days extra at leisure or can visit new places.
