Autorefractor Keratometers for Better Eye Tests
Autorefractor keratometer are actually two different instruments with different uses but are clubbed together for greater ease of detection of eye ailments. It is increasingly seen in most eye clinics. While the Autorefractors are used to correctly find out which correctional lenses are needed for eye ailments like myopia or hypermetropia, Keratometers are used to find out the defects in the curvature of the cornea which causes a disease known as Astigmatism where the patient is not able to focus correctly the any object in both saggital and tangential plane.
Autorefractor is a computer controlled refractor which is used by the eye specialist to correctly asses what correctional lenses will be needed two correct the defects in vision. The patient is made to look into the auto refractor in which there is a moving picture which the patient tries to see. A number of measurements are taken to determine when the image is formed on the retina. Before the examination a drop is put in the eye to relax the ciliary muscles which move the lens. This is done to prevent any misdiagnosis due to pseudomyopia. Autorefractor is mainly used to diagnose any refractive error in the patient. There are basically two types of refractive errors. The first is Myopia or shortsightedness where the distant vision is affected. The second is hypermetropia or long sightedness where the near vision is effected. Autorfractor helps to determine the extent of refractive errors and then accurately determine which spherical lens should be used to correct the vision.
The second part of the Autorefractor Keratometer is the Keratometer which is used to check the curvature of the cornea. Keratometer is used to determine the extent of aberration in the curvature of the Cornea which causes a disease known as astigmatism. The instrument was invented by the French Ophthalmologist Louis Émile Javal who himself suffered from Astigmatism. The modern day keratometer is a far cry from the machine which was invented by Louis Émile Javal. Today’s Keratometer is equipped with optical sensors and computer operated to measure the curvature of the cornea which is then compared with a pre determined value. The measurements help the eye specialist to determine the extent of the aberration in the curvature of the cornea and the degree of astigmatism.
