Relocating to Gibraltar: the FAQs

Regardless of whether you’re part of a corporate relocation to Gibraltar or you are planning to retire to the Rock, no doubt you’ve got lots of questions running through your mind. Questions about the logistics, the practicalities and the realities of moving to and living in Gibraltar. As a leading relocation and concierge company, at Indigo (http://www.indigo.gi) we have the answers to these questions. Here are just some of the most frequently asked questions that we can help with:

Do I need a Residence Permit? If you are a British Citizen (or a Gibraltarian, obviously!), then you don’t need a residence permit to live or work in Gibraltar. If you are from the EU you can apply for a residence permit which will be issued if you can prove you will not be a burden on the state (through your own income or employment). If you are from outside of the EU, you will need to provide details of an employment contract in Gibraltar, as well as proof that no Gibraltarian or EU citizen is able to do that job. Only then will you be issued with a residence permit. As part of our Gibraltar administration services, Indigo can help advise on your suitability and, if applicable, help you get your permit.

Is it possible to commute to Gibraltar from Spain? Yes, lots of people work in Gibraltar but live in Spain. It may seem like a big commute, but in fact it’s easy to park in nearby La Linea in Spain, and walk, bike or bus across the frontier to work in Gibraltar. Many of the people we help to relocate to Gibraltar end up choosing to live in Spain while benefitting from the employment opportunities on the Rock. We can help with both Gibraltar and Spain administration.

If I live in Gibraltar, will I be entitled to healthcare? An employee in Gibraltar who pays tax and social security is entitled to free healthcare from the Gibraltar Health Authority (GHA), as well as free healthcare from the Spanish National Health Service if you live in Spain.

What is beneficial about the tax system in Gibraltar? Given its offshore status, Gibraltar boasts a highly beneficial tax regime which is more liberal than that of the UK. For instance, there is no Wealth Tax or Capital Gains Tax, no Inheritance Tax and no Estate Duty, and corporation tax is levied at a much lower rate, which is why so many companies choose corporate relocation to Gibraltar for their headquarters.

This is just a handful of the questions which we are frequently asked when it comes to moving to, retiring to or working in Gibraltar. Why not contact us through the Indigo website at http://www.indigo.gi in order to find out more?
