Madurai in Tamil Nadu is known for marvelous temples, which include the popular Sree Meenakshi Temple. These temples are fine examples of rich architecture and sculptural works. Located on the banks of the river Vaigai, Madurai has been a major settlement for over 2000 years.

Thirumalai Nayak Palace was built by King Thirumalai Nayak in 1636. The palace has two parts known as Swargavilasa and Rangavilasa. The palace has theatre, shrine, apartments, armoury, palanquin place, royal bandstand, quarters, pond and garden.
Gandhi Museum in the temple town has photos, paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, quotations, and some articles that were used by him. Mariamman Teppakulam has a tank having an idol of Vinayaka which is located on a platform at the centre. Another attraction is Tirupparankundram. It is famous for Pandyan rock-cut shrines that date back to the 8th century. The later came to be known as the Nayaka Hindu temple. Located on the top a hill, people believe that it is one of six abodes of Lord Subramanya.
Other places of interest in Madurai are Alagar Koil, Koodal Azhagar Solari, St. Mary’s Cathedral, Gobitalayam Dargah and Adhisyam (water theme park).
