Top Ideas for Throwing a Themed Party
In previous guides I have outlined some sure winners when it comes to throwing an outdoor or dinner party – from ensuring a lovely ambience such as by hanging Chinese lanterns to making your guests comfortable with the right music.
If you want that added stroke of flair however, there’s nothing like a themed party to make a get-together more fun. With a little creativity and forethought, you can make it an unforgettable night.
To help you get a good kick start, this final article in the series of guides will outline some of the most successful themed party concepts to choose from. See Part 1, 2, 3 and 4 for a wealth of further ideas.
19 – Dinner Party Swap Night
Aim – perfect for around six couples, the goal here is for everyone to host a course at their home, meaning the guests will travel to each house for their next bite. While this allows for each couple to really go all out on their specific course, the idea will obviously not work well if guests don’t live fairly close to each other.
This would be one of the only themed parties I’ve thus far outlined where dress and decorations aren’t necessary – this concept is all about wowing guests with your cooking.
Do bear in mind however that for a dinner party swap night to be successful, you will all have to co-ordinate carefully so that every meal at each house is distinctive yet complimentary.
20 – Flapper 1920s Fun
Aim – think of the style, elegance and good-times of a 1920s party, where ladies dress in gorgeous flapper-style dresses and the men don suave tuxedos.
Musically, the 1920s offer some nostalgically legendary songs to put everyone into the era and set the mood. To liven things up, the Charleston and Fringe are classic dances to add to the fun. In terms of decorations, this won’t be difficult to get right – keep it simple yet elegant.
When it comes to food and drink, you can’t go wrong with champaign, cocktails and sophisticated canapés.
21 – Wine or Beer Tasting
Aim – a raucously fun evening where you cover up the labels of different beverages and challenge your guests to guess their names. Even if you and your friends are not sophisticated connoisseurs that are able to tell a Sauvignon Blanc from a Bordeaux, you can keep it fairly simple with well-known brands, plus the alcohol will get the party going in no time!
If you do a beer tasting, it would be a good idea to decorate your home to appear like a German festival or even a cosy pub. If it’s to be a wine tasting, you could get creative by presenting a vineyard theme complete with vines, checked tablecloths and candles in bottles.
The beverage side of things for this type of party is obvious as it’s the main event – although do ensure guests are not getting behind the wheel if they go over the limit. In terms of food, the best compliment would be a rustic feast of cheeses, breads and cold meats.
Conclusion
You can add real spice into an evening by making it a themed event. This is not as tricky as many people might think – the right flair to create an unforgettable atmosphere need not be expensive, such as buying warmly inviting decorations like Chinese Lanterns. And with a little effort from your guests in terms of wearing a suitable outfit to match the occasion, you can host a truly extraordinary event.
