Air Asia: Moving Towards Fuel Efficiency!
The latest announcement that will see the airline doing its bit towards the environment, as well as cutting down on its own fuel costs has come at the right time, when fuel prices are spiraling upwards, and more and more industries that are deeply associated with fuel in their operations move towards cutting down on the consumption of fuel. Aircraft manufacturers too have taken into consideration this concern in the airline industry and are adopting innovations in their technology towards solving this crisis in their own way.
Airbus has introduced a new Airbus 320 with special devices which go a long way in reducing the fuel consumption of aircraft. Sharklets, as these tiny devices are known, are fitted onto the wingtips of aircraft so that they fly more distances, at the same time showing a reduction in the amount of fuel consumed. The whole world is recognizing these efforts that are being taken in the airline industry and Air Asia has been the first to acknowledge it and adopt it firsthand.
The first Airbus A320 with the latest technology of Sharklets, is first being delivered to Air Asia and they are mighty proud of it too! Tony Fernandes, the man who singlehandedly turned around the airline’s fortunes years ago, acknowledges the contribution of the Airbus A320 in the growth of the airline’s reach and popularity. He rightly points out that the Airbus A320 has enabled his airline to completely makeover the short haul business in the continent of Asia. The aircraft has also contributed greatly to the possibility of low fares and this has been a key factor in the low fares business of Air Asia.
The Chief Operating Officer of Airbus too recognizes the mutually beneficial role that Air Asia and the airline manufacturer have played over the years. During the launch of the Airbus A320 with the new Sharklets technology, John Leahy was proud that Air Asia had chosen the new aircraft with absolute readiness, to initiate a fresh era in fuel savings. Recognizing the growth and current status of the airline he also pointed out the respect that Air Asia has in the airline industry due to their thirst for continuous improvement.
The new technology of Sharklets is set to save a lot of fuel for the airline. The aircraft which will begin being delivered in December 2012 are set to save at least 4% of the total fuel on long haul routes with projections showing a reduction of at least 1000 tons per aircraft of CO2 reductions. This is great news to not only the airline which will see more savings, but also the environment which can well benefit from even the smallest changes that are made.
Continually improving itself, the move to buy new Airbus A320s with the Sharklet technology will only improve the image as well as operations of Air Asia.
