Before You Treat Vitiligo with Benoquin Cream

Vitiligo is a type of skin disorder which can be treated several ways, including the application of monobenzone, the generic name of benoquin.  It is a de-pigmenting agent with a mechanism of action which is not yet comprehended in its fullness.  When you apply this topical treatment the excretion of melanin from the melanocytes is intensified.  Melanocytes are the cells that produce melanin.  This is the action that results in de-pigmenting effect on the skin.  You cannot predict the results of this medication, which may happen in 1 to 4 months.

If you suffer from vitiligo, it may comfort you to know that medically, it is not dangerous.  However, it can affect your appearance and may affect your social activities. If you want to treat it with this cream, it is important that you know all the facts about it before making your purchase.

The histology of your skin is not altered by the depigmentation process of monobenzone.  It is the same as that when observed with vitiligo.  The outer layer (epidermis) of your skin is normal except that the melanocytes is nonexistent.  Benoquin’s role is to discolor permanently the skin surrounding the vitiligous lesions in patients with vitiligo affecting  more than 50% of the body surface area.  This condition is called propagated idiopathic vitiligo. Vitiligo may spread widely from causes that are unknown.

You topically apply the monobenzone or benoquin cream to your normal skin around the white spots or patches.  Take note that the cream is not prescribed to treat freckles.  It is not also recommended for treatment of hyperpigmentation resulting from use of perfumes, or inflammation neither on the skin, nor for chloasma or mask of pregnancy.  The cream is not to cure malignant melanoma, café-au-lait spots and other non melanin-related pigmentation.

How do you administer the monobenzone or benoquin cream?  For best results, you apply a thin layer and rub it into the normal pigmented area of the skin evenly.  Do it twice or thrice a day, or what is instructed by your health care specialist.   Direct and prolonged exposure to sunlight should be avoided.  When you need to go outside, don’t forget to use sunscreen lotion and protective clothing over your skin.  Depending on the darkness of your skin depigmentation may show after 1 – 4 months.  When no positive result is seen after 4 months, you need to stop the medication.

When you achieve your desired level of skin color you can use the cream twice a week only just so you can sustain the result of depigmentation.  As a caution, the cream should not be used like the common cosmetic bleaching creams, because it is a very powerful cream that can generate permanent discoloration in your skin.  This should be applied only to widespread vitiligo.  When applying the cream, take care that it does not get into the interior parts of your nose and mouth, and into your eyes.  Flush it out with plenty of water when it happens.  Keep the cream in a dry and safe place, out of children’s reach. When it is accidentally consumed, bring the child to a hospital or poison control center immediately.
