Suri – the temple town of West Bengal
Suri, also known as Siuri, is located in the state of West Bengal in the eastern part of India. It is the district headquarters of the Birbhum district, and is about 220 km from the state capital Kolkata. It was constituted as a municipality in 1876.
Suri is well connected both by road and railway to the different parts of the state. Government run buses operate daily from here to different important cities of West Bengal. It is a model railway station and is in route of many important trains which connects it to different parts of the country.
Suri is known for the many temples in and around the place. Some of the famous temples situated in the town are Kali Temple, Jonaki Kali Mandir, Bamni Kalibari, Bhabatarini Kalibari, Dangalpara Anandpur Sarbajanin Matri Mandir, Radha Ballav Mandir, Shani Mandir, Damodar Mandir, Chattoraj’s Durga Mandir and Kendua Dakshin Para Kali Mandir, Rabindarpally Kalibari and the very famous Rakshakali Temple, among others. There are also a few mosques in Suri and among them the Masjid at Masjid More and that at Madrasa Road are quite well known. The Birbhum Institute Of Engineering & Technology (BIET) which was established in the year 1999 has becomes one of the important landmarks of Suri. The Shahid Bhagat Singh Park is a popular park here.
The economy of Suri is dependent on a number of industries here which include rice milling, cotton and silk weaving, and furniture manufacture.
Like most places on West Bengal, there is a preference for sweets even in Suri, and the place is famous for the preparation of morabba – a type of sweet prepared with fruits and sugar syrup. Apart from the Durga Puja which is celebrated with much grandeur, Suri is known for its famous fair called ‘Barobagan Mela’ which is celebrated here annually.
Suri has a mild and dry climate. Summer lasts from the middle of March to the middle of June and is generally hot. This is followed by the monsoon season which lasts till October mid. The winter season prevails from mid-October to March and is mildly cold with cool breeze. This is the best season to visit Suri, though the place can be visited throughout the year.
